Like any other genre of photography, it witnessed some dramatic changes, withstood many cultural revolutions to finally emerge in its present state.

I will gladly take you on a short mind trip from the very dawn of Glamour Photographs to their modern state – afterwards we will dabble in foreseeing their probable future.

Adolescence. It is a very controversial issue of where the history of glamour photography really begins. Some seek the roots in Paris of 1930′s, where so-called “french postcards” were sold in abundance – others deem Victorian photography and its gurus to be responsible. Some think that cultural foundation and inspiration for glamour photo lies in XVI and XVIII centuries. To put it simply, the question of origin of glamour photo is far from being answered. What I think is that the most likely period in which beauty photography was born is 1920′s and 1930′s, which were quite a vibrant time in terms of arts and culture. Also, it is from the first half of twentieth century that the history of classic beauty photography can be traced.

Glorious 50′s and Onwards. The period that started with 50′s was perhaps the most successful – and hard – time for glamour photography. Shining star of Betty Grable was in zenith ever since pre-WWII time; in 1953 Marilyn Monroe emerged on Playboy’s cover and led glamour photography from darkness of controversy and public outrage into the light of recognition. Pamela Green and other famous and charming models contributed to glorifying glamour photography at its finest, winning the heart of audience worldwide.

Nowadays – Digital Fever. As time passed, beauty photography became colorful, frivolous, scandalous and much more ingenious. New names started conquering the stage, glamour magazines and beauty photography admirers – those were Dita von Teese, Heidie Van Horne, Lucy Pinder, Bernie Dexter and many others. As it happened, film gave way to digital photography. Technical progress improved the visual quality of glamour images and made the process of shooting dead simple. An amateur in possession of DSLR could potentially become a beauty photographer. Combined with World Wide Web, a real army of both gifted artists and usual dabblers emerged in the online world.

Are you Afraid of 3D? Finally, nowadays we face a new era, when 3D rendering easily re-creates that very glamour that we are so striving to deliver. 3D modeling is an art as well, and a complex one, but it seems to be taking over the field of glamour images. I strongly believe that no artificial computer rendering can ever excel the natural beauty and genuine work of a talented artist. If this is a struggle of old and modern, my side is with the former.

I feel optimistic about the future – oils, film and digital have found their admirers and seem immortal. Artistic 3D may join these ranks, and so may whatever comes next. We don’t owe all the masterpieces to technology – we owe them to artists, their inspiration and their unique vision. A true artist at heart can never forget this simple truth – so you remember it as well.

Photos are about individual preferences, but there are a few rules of photo composition that can help build the basis of an interesting photo that you can turn into a canvas photo print. One of the key elements to look for when composing a photo is  ‘lines and different shapes’. It is helpful to train your eyes to look for lines and shapes. They can be a powerful building block that can have a dynamic impact on your photo. Lines and shapes are helpful in adding mood and atmosphere to your finished product or creating a desired effect. They can be useful in leading the eyes from one part to another or leading the eye to a particular part of your image or another part.

Using lines and shapes takes some practice and it is often useful to go back through previous photos you have taken to see what has worked and what hasn’t worked. Have a look at all of the different lines and shapes that you can use. Using these tips will add to your finished print.

 

Horizontal Lines

Horizontal lines can be powerful in creating photos that are peaceful. They can have the ability to convey restfulness and stability. An example of this would be a foal sleeping in flowers. To achieve a more balanced picture within the confines of your frame try to create a diagonal that starts just to one side of the corner and moves to the one side of the opposite corner.
